The Boiler Engineer Apprentice is a full-time, three-year apprenticeship position. The Apprentice will receive on-the-job training and will work under the guidance of experienced Boiler Engineers to learn the necessary skills to become a skilled Boiler Engineer. After successful completion of the apprenticeship, the candidate will be eligible for a position as a Journeyman Boiler Engineer, within the company.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and understand blueprints and schematics
- Work with craftspeople including Boiler Engineers, pipe fitters, sheet metal fabricators, painters, mechanics, and carpenters to ensure efficient operation of boiler systems
- Learn maintenance, repair, and machinery and mechanical equipment including pumps, motors, and other boiler related equipment
- Adhere to all safety protocols including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Arc Flash, and Environmental regulations
- Gain proficiency in the use of small hand power tools under supervision
- Conduct tests and perform maintenance tasks under guidance to ensure boiler safety and reliability
- Troubleshoot system problems with guidance and support
- Assist with the installation of new boiler systems and repairs
- Ensure all work is performed in compliance with safety regulations and building codes
- Participate in training sessions and learning opportunities to improve skills and knowledge
- Assist with maintaining inventory and equipment and supplies
- Ensure that all tools and equipment are properly maintained and stored
- Perform maintenance related general cleanup of facilities as needed
- Assist other departments as needed, including backfill for absences
- Respond to emergency work requests as directed by supervisors
- Completion of additional certifications or training as required by the role
Work Schedule & Hours
2nd shift:
- Tue/Wed/Thu: 1:30-9:30pm
- Fri: 12:30-9:30pm
- Sat: 10:30am-7:30pm
- Sun/Mon: Off
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience and knowledge of boilers, steam systems, and HVAC
- Valid Driver’s License
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication skills
- Willingness to learn and take direction from experienced Boiler Engineers
- Ability to work a regular schedule, which may include weekends and holidays
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a vocational training program in boiler operation or a related field
- Prior experience in mechanical systems, facilities maintenance, or a related field
- Familiarity with boiler maintenance procedures and safety regulations
- Knowledge of safety regulations and building codes as they pertain to boiler operation and maintenance
- Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions and procedures related to boiler maintenance tasks
- Basic understanding of boiler chemistry and water treatment processes
- Computer literacy and the ability to learn and use maintenance management systems
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and documentation related to boiler systems
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to clearly report issues and work progress
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to climb ladders and do overhead work
- Must be able to bend, squat and complete tasks on the floor
- Able to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time
- Able to operate hand and power tools for extended periods of time
